Welcome to the new year !
Janauary in Michigan! Great time of the year if ya hate the Sun.
Not much on my mind this month so I asked my readers how about a topic? I got a response about bike show judging at our local bike show in Birch Run , Michign That is a good topic so I will give it a shot.
For thos people not in my area we had a local bike show last week put on by non biking promoters. This show has been going on close to 12 years or so with varied results.
I personally think we have too many vendors there and not enough bikes. However since this is one of the only shows where bike show participates get to show their bikes for free The vendors fees pay for the arena. If we can`t have less vendors it would be nioe to at least have Motorcycle related vendors allowed only.
Now I will try to address the judjing at the bike show. First and foremost I had nothing to do with the judging. I simply did the non paying voluteer announcing since the people that were suppossed to announce and take care of the judging backed out at the last moment."Slackers"
Newboy and Ratzoe stepped up and volunteered for the thankless job of judjing. I am not sure what kind of job they did since I haven`t gotten enough feedback either way on this matter. I do know that the judging and presentation was much better than the half ass job done last year from what people have told me. On that subject if anyone would like to volunteer for bike judging in the Mid Michigan area please email me your name and number and I would be glad to forward it to the promotors that need such brave and often criticized people.

Thanks for the topic.

don't let the name fool you, it was newboys system that made the judging go smooth and keep everyone happy.

Just kinda curious, what are the criteria used to judge bikes? are they the same for each kind of show or are therer differences?

genrally the criteria should be the same for all shows. they break it down into categories such as chrome, powdercoating, paint, originality, quality, rideabilty, engineering,etc..... these categories are judged on a scale 1-10.

using this system makes it as fair as can be.

some judges differ on the types of classes they put bikes into as well.

Sounds kinda hard to pick out the winners when ther are so many cool bikes out there. How much does personal preference come into play? I know everyone is supposed to be impartial but if you have a preference for a certain type of bike ie sportsters do you give them a closer look than say a yamaha, just kinda curious what the tie breakers are?

yes it is kinda hard to remain imparcial, but you try to mix up your judges on different taste. for example ratzo is more into the chromed out new style choppers and pro street look, where i myself are more into the use on color w/ paint and powdercoat, and the old schooll look. so everybike gets a fair shot. that is also the good part of the point system i told you about in the last posting. using a 1-10 scale on the categories makes a judge look at different aspects of the bike rather than what he/she may like personally. for example i am not a huge fan of chrome, but if a bike has no chrome its gets 1 on the scale and if it has perfect chrome and a lot of it it will end up with a7-10 scoring. so yes a do agree it is harder than most people think to judge a show w/out prejudice but you just have to do your best and the point system and using judges w/different tastes you can get it close.

sorry forgot about your tie breaker question. miles ridden is what we use. if two bikes tie it up on points we give it to the person who really uses the bike for what it was made for. riding riding riding....

Sounds interesting, it might also give a new perspective on how to look at bikes if you were to judge them. Thanks for the info.
